Compassionate Communities

The CEPPP is collaborating with the Canada Research Chair on Patient and Public Partnership to co-construct an evaluation plan for Compassionate Communities, a research-action project on community-based end of life care.

Compassionate Communities is a model which was developed in the mid-2000s for palliative care. This model builds on the strengths of the community and the health system, offering a community-oriented and health promotion perspective on end of life. Compassionate Communities widens the support circle of patients and families faced with terminal illness, mobilizing members of the community through relationships of mutual support.

The main objective of this project is to co-construct, implement, and evaluate the two pilot Compassionate Communities in Montreal through a participative process anchored in research-action. This project will enable the researchers to better understand how the effects of a Compassionate Community vary according to the characteristics of different communities, which in turn will allow for a better understanding of how to adapt and scale Compassionate Communities across Quebec and Canada.
